Chapter 11: Torn Pages

Kelly

I'd never imagined I'd be packing up my things in such a rush, under such circumstances. Every piece of clothing I stuffed into my suitcase was like a reminder of the life I was being forced out of. I had always thought I'd have more time, more... options. But all of that was gone now.

I managed to keep my sobs quiet as I continued packing. I didn't want anyone to see me like this, broken and lost. My heart was in shreds and my mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. Where was I supposed to go? I had no home, no place to call my own.

There were only two things I had left: my job, the CEO position Jack had let me retain out of spite, and my own bank account. I was lucky that I had been diligent in saving up over the past year. But money couldn't buy me peace of mind, couldn't fill the gaping hole in my heart.

As I zipped up my suitcase, a fresh wave of tears started to fall. I didn't deserve this... I didn't. I had made mistakes, sure, but didn't everyone? Didn't everyone deserve a chance to explain, to make amends? Apparently, Jack didn't think so.

I didn't want to leave the room, our room. But I couldn't stay here either, not when every corner, every piece of furniture reminded me of him. Of us. Of the love that I had started to believe could be real.

Finally, with one last look around, I hoisted my suitcase and headed for the door, my heart heavy in my chest.

I walked over to Kate, tears blurring my vision. She seemed so small and fragile as she looked up at me, her eyes filled with concern and compassion.

"I'm so sorry, Kelly," she whispered, reaching out to envelop me in a warm hug. "I know this is hard. But trust me, things will get better."

I clung to her, feeling her warmth seeping into me, steadying my shaking form. She had been there for me, had become a friend when I had none. Now I was leaving her behind too. The pain of it all was too much to bear.

"No, Kate," I mumbled into her shoulder. "This time, I really messed up." I pulled back, looking into her eyes. "He lost his best friend, and now... he lost me. I don't know if he will ever forgive me."

Kate squeezed my shoulders reassuringly, her eyes never leaving mine. "He's angry right now, yes. But he needs time to cool down. He's been through so much, Kelly. Give him some time. I'm sure everything will get better."

With a final squeeze, I let go, stepping back. I wiped the fresh tears off my cheeks and gave her a small smile. "You've been such a great friend to me, Kate, I’ll miss you."

Kate's eyes welled up with tears, and she gave me a small nod. She hugged me one last time, whispering, "I'll miss you too, Kelly," before letting go.
